Earthworm Jim, not to be confused with the game series WORMS, is a side-scrolling action game featuring a superhero worm character named Jim, who wears a robotic suit.
This series was yet another result from a toy company wanting to promote merchandise to fans, this time it was Playmates. After seeing the success of Sonic The Hedgehog, Playmates wanted their own series. In 1994, the first game was launched on Super Nintendo and SEGA Genesis.
It was well-received, and prompted three more titles to launch up until 1999. After receiving less-than-ideal reviews of the last game, the series suddenly went dormant for half a decade.
Rumours of remakes and sequels have been floating around, but not much information is available. During its prime, a 23-episode cartoon was launched, which starred the voice of Homer Simpson playing Earthworm Jim!
While there may not be more games from this line, the original 4 have been ported to Xbox & Playstation online stores numerous times, as well as a port on the Genesis Mini. Regardless of what the future holds for this character, the first two games will be remembered for their astounding graphics, immersive soundtrack and wacky humour.
