Paper boy was an arcade game which featured bicycle handlebars as your controller. The game was originally released in 1985 by Atari Games and ran on the Atari System 2 hardware. The cabinet was custom designed for the peculiar control method. The handle bars was a modified Star Wars Yoke, it had a button on each side to throw the papers, and when pressed forward you would accelerate, pull back you would break.
The premise of the game was to deliver the Daily Sun to all the customers on your route, while avoiding obstacles. You play for one week, trying to deliver papers to all your subscribers, while vandalizing non-subscribers homes and avoiding crashing.
This classic game was ported to home consoles starting in 1986. The game was released on the Commodore 64, NES, and SNES.The NES release was particularly notable as it was the first NES game that was developed in North America, it was released in October of 1989.
Paper Boy has been released on almost every console since the game was initially released, no wonder it’s such a classic!
