He-Man and the Masters of the Universe started in the early 1980s as a unique action figure line created by Mattel, after the company missed out on making Star Wars toys. The story mixed fantasy and science fiction, following the hero He-Man as he fought the evil Skeletor on the magical planet of Eternia. To help sell the toys, Mattel worked with Filmation to make a cartoon in 1983, which became a huge hit and set the trend for toy-based cartoons. The franchise quickly grew to include comic books, a spin-off series called She-Ra: Princess of Power, and even a live-action movie in 1987. Although the original toyline ended in the late ’80s, He-Man has come back several times, in a 2002 reboot, the 2021 Netflix series Revelation, and re-releases of the original figures, keeping it alive as a lasting and much-loved part of pop culture.
