Hey Cobras!
G.I. Joe, the 12-inch action figure, was introduced by Hasbro in 1964, marking the birth of the “action figure” concept. Designed to appeal to boys as a counterpart to dolls, G.I. Joe featured articulated joints and realistic military uniforms, allowing for a wide range of poses and imaginative play. The line expanded to include various military branches, accessories, and vehicles, setting a new standard for boys’ toys and influencing the entire toy industry.
Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, G.I. Joe remained a dominant toyline, but changing attitudes toward war and rising production costs led to a decline in popularity by the late 1970s. In response, Hasbro rebranded G.I. Joe as a 3.75-inch figure in 1982, focusing on a team of heroes rather than a single soldier. As G.I. Joe celebrates its 60th anniversary, the original 12-inch figures remain a significant part of toy history, remembered for their innovation and impact on the industry.
