Strawberry Shortcake was created in 1979 by Muriel Fahrion as a character for American Greetings’ greeting cards. The character quickly gained popularity, leading to the development of a toyline by Kenner Products in 1980. The original Strawberry Shortcake doll was known for her red hair, bonnet, and strawberry-scented hair. The success of this doll led to the creation of additional characters like Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie, and Raspberry Tart, each with their own unique scents and personalities, all set in the whimsical Strawberryland.

Throughout the 1980s, the Strawberry Shortcake brand expanded beyond toys into television specials, animated series, and a wide range of merchandise, becoming a significant part of 1980s pop culture. The franchise underwent several revivals, with redesigns in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s to appeal to new generations of children. As of 2024, Strawberry Shortcake celebrates its 45th anniversary, marking its longevity and continued relevance as a beloved character in the world of children’s entertainment.
