Handheld systems have been around since 1976, when Mattel put out the first ever electronic handheld game Auto-Race. However, they weren’t the ones who made handhelds popularity boom, as the Nintendo Gameboy is the one to thank for that. Since then, every company has tried getting into the handheld biz, with some that did well like the Sega Game Gear, and some that never made it all that far. Some of the systems with the most sales in the market happen to be handhelds, and they still hold a popularity that is hard to compete with.
