The Garbage Pail Kids is a series of sticker trading cards made by the Topps Company, the company that produces baseball, hockey and football trading cards. The cards, released in 1985, was a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids, which were also popular at the time.
The art on the cards were grotesque characters with obscene abnormalities. Their names were various play on words such as Clark Cant. Each set has two versions, with the same artwork but a different character name.
The cards became hugely popular that they made 15 series. But with such a huge popularity comes a few hiccups, in the form of lawsuits from the original Cabbage Patch Kids, so Topps agreed to change the artwork further. Beyond the controversy in the courts, the cards were also banned from several schools, teachers citing that they were a distraction.
The cards were so popular companies like Funko released a series of disgustingly detailed Pop’s! and other vinyl figures.
